What Does the Future of Walleye Fishing on Leech Lake Look Like?

Leech Lake, a beloved gem in Minnesota’s vast fishing landscape, has long been a hotspot for anglers chasing the perfect walleye. The Leech Lake walleye population remains strong, however, recent surveys conducted by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) have revealed a dip in recruitment of young walleyes, sparking concern. Leisure Outdoor Adventures guides don’t just take clients fishing, they work with the DNR in the Leech Lake Input Group which helps formulate future fisheries management plans for the lake. This ongoing work ensures future generations can continue to enjoy exceptional walleye fishing.

Leech Lake Management Plan Calls for Walleye Stocking

Regular population surveys are essential in tracking the health of a fishery. In recent assessments, the DNR found lower than expected numbers of young (5-month-old) walleyes in fall surveys in Leech Lake. Test netting results and electrofishing surveys can be reviewed on the DNR’s website for those that want to dive into the numbers. The 2021-2025 Leech Lake Fisheries Management Plan, which was drafted by working with the Leech Lake Input Group, calls for stocking 7.5 million walleye fry into Leech Lake in the spring of 2025.

Fry stocking is a tried-and-true method for increasing fish populations when natural egg hatching rates are insufficient. Fry are young fish that are hatched in controlled conditions and then released into the wild to grow into adult fish, ready to be caught by anglers. Fry stocking will not help if the population bottleneck is actually found in later life-stages of Leech Lake walleyes; but this year’s planned efforts will help inform future decision making.

A Bright Future for Leech Lake’s Walleye Fishery

For anglers who enjoy fishing on Leech Lake, the 2025 stocking plan is exciting news. While it will take a few years for the stocked fry to reach harvestable sizes, this initiative working with LOA guides and the Leech Lake Input Group will help inform the revision of the Leech Lake Management Plan, due next year. Ongoing monitoring, planning, and action will ensure the lake will remain a top destination for walleye fishing in the future. Anglers can expect great fishing for your favorite species in Leech Lake including walleye, muskie, perch, and bass.
