Fishing is heating up on Gull Lake Minnesota

A smiling fishing guide client stands on a boat at Gull Lake Minnesota, holding up four large walleye —two in each hand—with cloudy skies and water in the background, capturing the thrill of fishing.

BRAINERD AREA REPORT:

As of today, May 28, 2025, anglers in the Brainerd are enjoying favorable fishing conditions, with multiple species actively biting. Here’s the latest:

The walleye bite remains good, particularly in shallow, wind-swept sand/rock or sand cabbage areas ranging from 5 to 16 feet deep. Anglers have found success using 1/8 oz jigs tipped with spot-tail shiners, leeches under bobbers, and trolling stick baits during the evening or after dark.

 Tips for Success
• Timing: Early morning and late evening hours often yield the best results.
• Location: Focus on shallow sand flats in 5-9 feet of water early and late. And break lines with the new weed growth in 8-16 feet of water during the late mornings/mid day periods.
• Bait: Using live bait such as spot-tail shiners and leeches. Also stick baits like Rapala #11 originals.
