Fishing on Leech Lake has really picked up the past week for multi species anglers. Walleye, Bass, Musky and Perch have been cooperating nicely. Water temps on Leech Lake and surrounding areas have been in the low to mid 70’s.
Walleye fishing on Leech Lake has been best in 14-18 ft of water on Rock / Sand transition as well as Grass and gravel flats in the same depths. We have done best with Jigs and leeches and or night crawlers casted away from the boat both with and without bobbers. Jigging Rapalas have also worked in the same areas. Look to stay off the fish to the best of your ability during daylight hours while casting to the fish vs trolling over them. Trolling shad raps in the evening hours at 2 – 2.5 mph have worked using crayfish and perch patterns in the same depth areas. Popular areas this week are portage bay weeds, sucker bay weeds as well as the north walker bay flats.
Muskie anglers are reporting active fish on classic Leech Lake muskie structure like shallow rocks and weed flats. The Main lake rocks in 3 to 7ft are notable structures. Bucktails and top water lures have moves fish this week. In the deeper weed areas look to move fish with both bucktails and pull pause baits while picking though the weeds.
Bass anglers area catching Small Mouth on classic deep rock flats in the main lake using tubes and ned rigs in 8-12 feet. Sunny days have been the best for small mouth. Large mouth are holding tight to cut banks and rice flats like steamboat bay. Heavy jigs and scum frogs have been best over the thick cover in shallow water.
